The National Computer Society (NCS) has nominated Mr. Austin Okere, the Founder, CWG Plc and Entrepreneur in Residence, Columbia Business School, New York, for the this year’s NCS Special Presidential Recognition Award. The decision was made at the NCS Annual Conference held on Wednesday 20th July 2016, in Abuja.

According to Mr. Iyiola Ayoola, the acting Executive Secretary of the NCS, the special Presidential Award was given to Austin Okere “in recognition of his invaluable contribution to the Society, the growth and promotion of ICT as well as the enhancement of professionalism in Nigeria”. He noted that the award was created to reward notable Individuals who have promoted the teaching, usage, development and application of Information Technology for human capacity development and economic growth in Nigeria.

The Nigeria Computer Society is the umbrella organization of all Information Technology Professionals, Interest Groups and Stakeholders in Nigeria. It was formed in 1978 as a platform for the advancement of Information Technology, Education and Practice in Nigeria through collaboration with relevant government agencies, institutions and private organisations towards proffering solutions to the issues of Digital development.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Austin Okere expressed appreciation to the NCS for the honour of the recognition and dedicated the award to his colleagues and other stakeholders at CWG plc.

“Today I feel very connected to the saying ‘if I stand tall, it is because I am standing on the shoulders of giants’. It resonates very deeply when I consider the strong team that I have been blessed to work with”, he said.

This adds to Okere’s robust roll or recognitions and awards. Recall that he was named the ICT Personality of the year and a fellow by the NCS in 2014. He is has been an entrepreneur in residence at the CBS, New York since 2009 and has been a member of the World Economic Forum Business Council on innovation and Intrapreneurship since 2013. Austin Okere was appointed into the Advisory Board of the Global Business School Network in June. He is also a member of the Governing Council of the Institute of Directors of Nigeria.

He has led CWG Plc, from being a start-up in 1992, to become the leading player in the ICT sector providing business enabling solutions across the Financial, Telecoms and Oil Sector, with aspiration to be the largest cloud provider in Africa by 2020.
